Types of John Deere Tillage Equipment

John Deere builds a complete range of tillage tools, each designed for a specific job in your field prep cycle. Here is a quick look at the categories we stock and what each one is built to do:

Disks - Slice and bury crop residue while sizing soil for a seedbed. The HSD Series, 2680H, 2660VT, 2633VT, and 2630, 2633, and 2635 tandem disks cover everything from light spring work to one-pass primary tillage.

Field Cultivators and Mulch Finishers - Smooth and level the soil profile for planting. The 2230LL and 2230FH field cultivators and 2330 mulch finisher work shallow at high speed for a uniform finish.

Chisel Plows and Coulter Chisels - Handle the primary fall pass on heavier ground. The 2430 Drawn Chisel Plow, 610 Integral Chisel Plow, and CC Series Coulter Chisels (CC11 through CC25) break up compaction while managing residue.

Rippers - Manage deep compaction and prep a fall seedbed. The 2730 Combination Ripper and MT Series In-Line Rippers (MT5, MT7, MT9, MT11) shatter hardpan up to 16 inches deep.

Strip-Till Bars - Apply nutrients and prep a tilled strip in a single pass. ST12, ST16, and ST18 models are available in integral and drawn configurations.

Vertical Tillage - Universal residue sizing for spring or fall. The 2660VT and 2633VT vertical tillage tools blend chopping, mixing, and finishing into one tool.

Reversible Plows - The 995 Reversible Moldboard Plow turns soil over for stubborn residue or rotational changes, available in 5, 6, or 7-bottom configurations.

Heavy Harrows - The HH50, HH70, and HH82 spread straw evenly across working widths up to 82 feet for fast residue management ahead of seeding.

Disk Applicators - The DA15, DA16, DA23, 2510L, and 2530L apply anhydrous and dry nutrients with minimal soil disturbance, working at speeds up to 10 mph.

Primary vs. Secondary Tillage: What's the Difference?

Primary tillage is the deep, aggressive pass that breaks up compaction, buries residue, and resets your field after harvest. It usually happens in the fall. The 2430 Chisel Plow, MT Series rippers, and 2635 Disk are built for primary work, hitting 8 to 16 inches deep to fracture hardpan and reset soil structure for the next season.

Secondary tillage is the shallower follow-up pass that smooths the surface, finishes the seedbed, and gets the field planter-ready. Tools like the 2230 Field Cultivator, 2330 Mulch Finisher, and HSD Series High-Speed Disk run 2 to 6 inches deep and work fast to level the field and create the right environment for seeds to take root.

Many growers across our area run a combination, with a primary pass in fall to manage residue and compaction, then a secondary pass in spring to finish the seedbed before planting potatoes, sugar beets, onions, or row crops. Vertical tillage tools like the 2660VT and 2633VT bridge the two roles, which is why they are popular on operations that want flexibility from a single tool.
